Momokos Organic Cotton Kidswear for Modern Parents

nationtimes June 13, 2025

How Momokos Is Redefining Organic Cotton Kidswear

Two moms. Two continents. One beautiful mission: to make safer, softer, and more sustainable clothes for children.

Shopping for baby clothes should feel joyful. But for many parents, it quickly turns into a maze of uncomfortable fabrics, flashy prints, and questionable materials.

That’s exactly what happened to Sarbani, a new mom looking for soft, breathable clothes for her daughter. She wasn’t asking for much,  just something safe for sensitive skin. But the options she found were either synthetic, overpriced, or simply not good enough.

And so, like all great mom-led ideas, Momokos was born out of necessity, frustration, and pure love.

A Brand Born from a Mother’s Instinct

Driven by a mother’s personal journey, Momokos — an organic kidswear brand — was founded by Sarbani Gupta Banik. Having battled eczema as a baby, Sarbani was determined to find safe, breathable, and comfortable clothing for her own child. This search led her to discover the benefits of organic cotton. What began as a personal quest soon blossomed into a meaningful mission, and Momokos was born — a brand deeply rooted in both experience and purpose.

Joining her on this journey is her childhood friend and co-founder — a Hollywood filmmaker and fellow mother based in Los Angeles — who brings a global creative sensibility to the brand. With her eye for aesthetics and background in storytelling, she ensures that every piece from Momokos is not only ethically made but also visually compelling and globally appealing.

A Global Vision Rooted in Indian Craft

What sets Momokos apart isn’t just what it offers — but how it’s built.

The brand seamlessly fuses age-old Indian craftsmanship with modern international design sensibilities. Each piece is made with GOTS-certified organic cotton, dyed using non-toxic, child-safe colors, and delivered in plastic-free, planet-friendly packaging.

“Our clothes are designed to breathe — literally and figuratively,” says Sarbani. “We’re not chasing trends. We’re creating timeless essentials that feel good, look great, last long, and reflect conscious parenting.”

With her co-founder’s storytelling expertise, Momokos designs go beyond utility.

“We want our clothes to be pieces you’d want to pass down — not just because they last, but because they mean something.”

Why It Matters for Every Child

Babies have delicate, ultra-absorbent skin. So what they wear matters more than we often realize. Synthetics and harsh dyes can lead to rashes, allergies, and long-term skin issues.

“Parents spend so much time baby-proofing the world — the sharp corners, the right food, the safest toys. But clothing touches their skin all day long. It should be part of that safety net,” says Sarbani.

But the impact goes beyond skin health. The fashion industry is one of the biggest global polluters, and children’s clothing — often bought in excess — contributes significantly to textile waste.

By focusing on small-batch production, biodegradable fabrics, and transparent supply chains, Momokos is helping parents make conscious choice for their kid.

The Challenges of Building a Business from Scratch

Creating a sustainable kidswear brand from scratch wasn’t easy. Factories pushed back on small order quantities. Suppliers didn’t always share their values. And consumers needed to be educated on why organic cotton costs more — and why it’s worth it.

“There were times we wondered if we were dreaming too big,” Sarbani admits. “But every time a parent told us, ‘My baby is usually quite fussy with clothes, but she seems so relaxed and happy in her Momokos outfit — she even giggles!,’ we knew we were on the right track.”

They stayed rooted in their values — even when it meant growing slower, explaining more, and pushing harder.

A Legacy Stitched in Love

Today, Momokos is more than a label — it’s a movement. Built by parents, for parents, it’s steeped in care, resilience, and hope.

“Our kids see our journey,” says Sarbani. “We hope they learn that small, daily choices like what you wear,  reflect your values.”

At Momokos, every stitch matters. Every outfit tells a story of love, intention, and a greener tomorrow. Because every child deserves clothing as gentle as their love and every parent deserves to trust that choice.
